Rain Barrels

What Are Rain Barrels?

Placed directly underneath a downspout or opening in the gutters, rain barrels are used to capture rain water from roofs and store it for later use.  Uses for the collected water can range from topping off pools, watering lawns, and watering gardens.  Typically they are made out of a 55 gallon drum, vinyl hose, PVC couplings, and a screened grate to keep insects and debris out.

Why Should I Have One?

During the summer, 40% of household water use is spent on garden and lawn watering.  Rain barrels provide many benefits including:

  • Conserves up to 1,300 gallons of water during the summer months
  • Allows for you to keep your lawn and plants green all summer
  • Helps save money on your water bill
  • Reduces storm water runoff into our lakes and streams
  • Reduces demand for treated tap water
  • Reduces energy demand

Where Can I Get One?

Some people enjoy working with their hands, and building things.  For those that are more hands on, rain barrels can be made with parts purchased from your local hardware and gardening stores.

For others that just don’t have the time to make a rain barrel, they can be purchased ready-made from a list of suppliers.
